Cheetah Digital had built a powerful cross-channel engagement platform for marketers. From 2017 to 2020, DesignMap helped the company design the product its capabilities deserved.
Cheetah Digital was a longstanding player in marketing technology, with a strong feature set held back by a dated, highly technical experience.
The engagement began in October 2017 as a two-week sprint: a high-fidelity concept redesign of the platform's data tools, about ten screens, built to show what the product could feel like. It opened a working relationship that ran two and a half years.
First, a vision the whole company could steer by.
DesignMap worked with Cheetah's product leaders on a comprehensive multi-year vision for the new marketing suite: a North Star for teams to execute toward. It took shape as a visiontype, a prototype built to communicate the big ideas, win buy-in, and align teams on where the product was going. Three ideas carried it. Machine learning and AI woven through the experience, so marketers could understand and act on complex customer data. Customer data marketers could add, manage, and explore without waiting on IT. And strategy tied directly to execution, so plans and the work that delivers them live in one place.

Then the work of driving toward it, release by release.
With the vision in place, DesignMap shifted to tactical design alongside Cheetah's product and development teams. Story-mapping workshops kept release phases anchored to whole user experiences rather than feature lists. Prioritization weighed user need alongside development effort and business impact. And because the development team was distributed, the collaboration itself was designed: asynchronous by default, with Figma introduced so design and engineering could work from the same source. Along the way, DesignMap rolled out a style guide and grew it into a full design system, unifying design across Cheetah's applications. The system let DesignMap concentrate on strategy, vision, and patterns while Cheetah's internal designers built the detailed deliverables, which is how a small outside team keeps a large product moving.

The vision, made concrete.

DesignMap worked with Cheetah Digital from October 2017 to April 2020. In 2021, Cheetah Digital became part of CM Group.
